What we heard from members

A few months ago, we asked members to tell us their priorities for group benefits based on a number of possible benefit changes. More than 4,000 members participated and we are reporting on what members told us about their preferences.

Post-retirement group benefits review update

The Municipal Pension Board of Trustees (board) works hard to provide members access to group health benefits in retirement. Its current review of these benefits is a significant investment in meeting this priority.

The board regularly reviews the post-retirement group benefits program as part of good governance. In addition, after changes made in January 2017, the board promised a thorough review of the dental program after two years of experience.

The current review is comprehensive and includes professional health benefit consultation to gather data about how the program is performing. We have analyzed claims data and other plan analytics, reviewed Pacific Blue Cross’ benefits delivery and group administration, benchmarked the program against other plans and reviewed the dental program.

Next steps

In June, the board will receive the final report from our professional health benefit advisor. Member preferences and input from the survey will also help inform how the board manages post-retirement group benefits moving forward. The board will consider all aspects of the review when it decides if any group benefit design changes are needed.

The board will announce its decision in fall 2020. Any changes would be effective January 1, 2021.
