Learn how the investment portfolio of BC's Municipal Pension Plan performed in recent years.


In 2018, the plan’s investment portfolio earned a net return of 2.1 per cent, against a performance benchmark of 0.2 per cent. As a result, the plan's assets increased from $51.4 billion to $53.0 billion.

A benchmark is an industry standard against which an asset or pool’s actual rate of return is compared. The plan's trustees use benchmarks to monitor and evaluate the performance of the investment managers.

Annual rate of return - the change in asset values over a year due to interest income, dividends, fees and changes in market value.

Annualized rate of return – over a multi-year period, the average yearly return. Annualized returns tend to be less volatile as they smooth the up and downs experienced in shorter time lines.
