Annual return/benchmark

The plan tracks returns annually and over the longer term.

The board has set a 6.25 per cent investment return as BCI’s target.
For 2022, the plan’s investment return was -3.5 per cent. The return was impacted by market conditions, including rising inflation and slow economic growth in the last six months of 2022.
For 2022, the five-year annualized return was 6.7 per cent, above the market benchmark of 5.2 per cent.

These longer-term results are important. The board’s primary objective is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the plan, making sure that all members, from those retired to those who just joined, receive a pension.
