Eligibility for past service - Municipal
Buying past service
Learn about buying service for eligible periods of employment that occurred before you or your employer joined the pension plan
Eligibility for past service
Are you eligible?
You may be eligible to buy your past service if:
- You are still working with the employer with whom the service occurred
- You have not waived your enrolment in the plan
If you signed a waiver choosing not to join the plan, either on or after April 1, 2000, you cannot buy past service. Ask your employer if you aren’t sure whether you signed a waiver.
If you contributed to another registered pension plan
Some employers may have had a different pension plan before joining the Municipal Pension Plan. Your eligibility may be affected if you contributed to another registered pension plan (RPP) during the period you want to buy.
To be eligible to buy past service, you must end your membership in the former RPP by removing your funds and using them toward buying past service. More information is available under Cost and payment for past service.
If your former plan was a defined benefit plan, you can’t buy service earned before 1991.
