Early retirement

Retiring before the normal retirement age will affect your pension. Here are the key points to consider.

Health and dental coverage in early retirement

When you retire, you will no longer be eligible for the extended health care and dental coverage you may have been receiving through your employer.

Instead, you may be eligible for health and dental coverage through the Municipal Retiree Benefit Trust. As a retired plan member, you can apply to enrol for extended health care and/or dental coverage, and you will pay a monthly premium for this coverage. These are not guaranteed benefits, and your coverage, premiums and deductibles may increase, decrease or be eliminated.

If you enrol in the extended health care plan or dental plan through the the Municipal Retiree Benefit Trust, the premiums for this health care coverage will be deducted from your monthly pension payment. If your pension is not large enough to cover the premiums, you can elect to pay Pacific Blue Cross directly for coverage.
