Buying past service

Learn about buying service for eligible periods of employment that occurred before you or your employer joined the pension plan

Application and deadlines for past service

Applying for past service

  1. Complete Part A of the Past Service Purchase Application
  2. Send the application to the employer where the service occurred. They complete Part B and submit it directly to the plan.
  3. Submit a copy of your ID to the plan

Deadline to apply

You must apply to buy your past service by whichever comes first:

  • Within five years from when you first contributed to the plan, or
  • Within 30 days of leaving the employer you were working for when the past service occurred

Requesting an updated Statement of Cost

You can only request a new statement if the payment due date on your current statement has passed.

  1. Send the first page of your Statement of Cost to your current employer.
  2. They will complete the ‘Request for updated cost’ section and submit it to the plan.
  3. You’ll receive a new Statement of Cost in approximately 6-8 weeks.
    • The updated cost to buy your service will be different due to the variable factors in how the cost is calculated.

You do not need to apply for a new Statement of Cost if you are looking for an estimate on how a partial payment may increase your pension.

Important

  • Your Statement of Cost is valid for 90 days.
  • Payment(s) must be received by the due date listed.

RRSP transfers can take 8–10 weeks to reach the plan. Start the process with your financial institution as soon as possible to ensure your payment(s) arrives by the due date.
