Buying past service

Learn about buying service for eligible periods of employment that occurred before you or your employer joined the pension plan

Estimate the increase to your pension

Your Statement of Cost includes an estimate of how buying past service can increase your future pension.

If you include an approximate amount in Part A of the application, we’ll also provide an estimate of how that amount could increase your pension.

The estimate is based on:

  • The earliest retirement age of 55 (or your current age, if older).
  • The amount the plan needs today to cover the future costs of your pension.
  • A single-life pension option with a 10-year guarantee period.
  • The assumption that you will continue working under the same conditions.

Estimate a partial amount

If the due date on your Statement of Cost is still valid, and you want an estimate on how a different amount can increase your pension:

  1. Send your request through My Account Message Centre with the amount you’re considering
  2. We’ll provide an estimate of how that amount could increase your pension
    • This is not a new Statement of Cost, the due date on your original statement still applies.

Note: We are unable to provide other estimates based on different retirement ages or pension options.

If you buy past service, your final pension will be calculated using:

  • Total pensionable service
  • Your five-year highest average salary earned exclusively with the Municipal Pension Plan; this does not include any salary earned during the past service purchase period
  • Your age at retirement
