John has worked for the City of Victoria for 45 years. He has served as president of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 50 for 28 years, representing workers at the City of Victoria (inside and outside), Victoria Police Board, BC SPCA Victoria branch, Downtown Victoria Business Association, Gorge Vale Golf Club, Royal Oak Burial Park, City of Langford (RCMP Support Services) and the United Way of Greater Victoria. John was appointed as a trustee on the Joint Greater Victoria Labour Relations (GVLRA)/CUPE Trust in 2010 and was chair of the trust from 2015 to 2019. He was also appointed and served as trustee from 2007 to 2019 on the GVLRA/CUPE Long Term Disability Trust.
